DANCING KITES
Thank you so much for the love for D-A-N-C-I-N-G K-I-T-E-S which is now streaming everywhere! Many of you have asked about the #Bali connection with this gentle piano piece…..and yes, it did all start one magical afternoon in Seminyak, Bali, last August, where reality and art intertwined in the most magical way.
At the time, I was reading Khaled Hosseini’s ‘The Kite Runner’ – an INCREDIBLE book about two boys growing up in Afghanistan, whose love for flying kites was set against a backdrop of hardship & war.
Well on this particular day, as I lay under the beach umbrella immersed in @khosseini ’s emotional story, I was astonished to see two little boys running down to the beach, carrying their homemade kites crafted from black bin liners. Their laughter, their freedom, their pure delight as they flew their kites high in the sky’s late afternoon winds… it was breathtaking.
D-A-N-C-I-N-G K-I-T-E-S became the soundtrack that played in my mind every afternoon as I watched these children fly their kites in the bright blue skies. It felt like the story I was reading had come alive before my eyes! In all my years of living, working, and traveling through Asia, I have never seen children flying home made kites on a beach! The synchronicity between these children and The Kite Runner still feels almost miraculous.
D-A-N-C-I-N-G K-I-T-E-S is a fusion of the boys’ joy on that Bali beach, fluttering kites & the poignancy of Khaled Hosseini’s ‘The Kite Runner’. I guess that explains the melancholy my family hear in it.
It’s no surprise that ‘The Kite Runner’ was voted book of the decade by The Times, Daily Telegraph, and Guardian! It’s also won several other awards, including the Borders Original Voices Award, San Francisco Chronicle Book of the Year, and Entertainment Weekly’s Best Book in 2003. If you haven’t read it yet, add it to your Xmas list! It’s a magnificent read! Oh….and the link to the full version of D-A-N-C-I-N-G K-I-T-E-S is in my bio if you fancy. Love, Jx
